Breast Cancer Awareness Month: 10 Meaningful Ways to Support Someone With Breast Cancer ๐ŸŽ€

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and suddenly pink is everywhere.

Pink ribbons. Pink products. Pink social media posts.

Awareness matters.

But if someone you love is actually going through breast cancer, you may be wondering:

What can I do that will genuinely help?

As a Stage IV cancer survivor and founder of Chemo Kits, I know how much the smallest gestures can mean during treatment. You don't need the perfect words, and you don't need to know how to fix what someone is going through.

Sometimes you simply need to show up.

So this Breast Cancer Awareness Month, let's turn all that pink into something meaningful.

Here are 10 thoughtful ways to support someone going through breast cancer treatment.

1. Send a Breast Cancer Care Package ๐ŸŽ

When someone is diagnosed with breast cancer, friends and family often want to send something immediatelyโ€”but have no idea what to buy.

That's exactly why I created Chemo Kits.

Our care packages are designed to combine practical comfort with a reminder that someone is thinking about you.

Instead of sending another bouquet of flowers, consider something she can actually use throughout treatment.

A care package can also be sent before her first chemotherapy appointment, during treatment, before surgery, or simply on a random day when she needs a little extra love.

2. Help Her Create a Treatment-Day Bag ๐Ÿ‘œ

Cancer treatment can mean a lot of time spent going back and forth to appointments.

Help her create a bag that stays packed and ready to go.

Depending on her needs, she might keep things like:

  • Phone charger

  • Headphones

  • Book or tablet

  • Journal

  • Water bottle

  • Comfortable layer

  • Personal items

  • Something entertaining

And, of course, she needs a cute bag to carry it all.

This is also a great Breast Cancer Awareness Month gift because you can fill the tote with smaller surprises before giving it to her.

3. Give Her a Head Wrapโ€”If She Wants One

Not every breast cancer treatment causes hair loss.

For women who do experience treatment-related hair loss, how they choose to handle it is incredibly personal.

Some women love wigs.

Some prefer hats.

Some wear head wraps.

Some proudly go bald.

If she likes head coverings, a soft chemo head wrap can be both practical and stylish.

The important thing is to let her decide what makes her feel most comfortable and confident.

4. Don't Just Say โ€œLet Me Know If You Need Anythingโ€

This comes from a good place.

But someone going through cancer treatment may not have the energy to figure out what she needs, decide who can help, and then ask for it.

Make your offer specific.

Instead of:

โ€œLet me know if you need anything.โ€

Try:

โ€œI'm dropping off dinner Thursday. What sounds good?โ€

Or:

โ€œI'm going to the grocery store. Send me your list.โ€

Or:

โ€œI can take the kids Saturday afternoon if you want some time to rest.โ€

Make saying yes easy.

5. Send Something That Makes Her Feel Like HER

Cancer has a frustrating way of taking over conversations.

Suddenly everyone wants to know about appointments, scans, treatments, and side effects.

But the woman you love is still the same person.

She still loves fashion.

Or skincare.

Or reality TV.

Or dogs.

Or football.

Or books.

Or inappropriate memes.

Whatever makes her her, don't forget it.

One of the most thoughtful cancer gifts may have absolutely nothing to do with cancer.

6. Remember Her Caregiver

Breast cancer rarely affects just one person.

Partners, parents, siblings, children, and friends often become caregivers while continuing to manage their own lives.

Check on them, too.

Bring coffee.

Send dinner.

Offer to stay with the patient while they take a break.

A small gesture that helps the caregiver can ultimately help the person going through treatment, too.

7. Send a โ€œThinking of Youโ€ Gift on a Random Day

The first few days after a diagnosis can bring an outpouring of support.

Then time passes.

Everyone else's life keeps moving.

But cancer treatment may continue for weeks or months.

That's why a random gift halfway through treatment can mean so much.

You don't need an occasion.

Send a Chemo Kit with a note that says:

โ€œNo need to respond. Just wanted you to know I'm thinking about you today.โ€

Sometimes being remembered is the gift.

8. Wear Pink With Purpose ๐ŸŽ€

During October, pink is everywhere.

If you're wearing pink or carrying a Breast Cancer Awareness item, use it as an opportunity to do something meaningful.

Check on someone going through treatment.

Support a cancer organization.

Help a caregiver.

Send a care package.

Educate yourself.

Or purchase something that helps keep the conversation going.

Awareness is powerful when it leads to action.

9. Don't Become Her Oncologist

Please don't send someone with breast cancer the โ€œmiracle cureโ€ you saw on social media.

Avoid recommending supplements, vitamins, herbal products, restrictive diets, or alternative treatments unless she specifically asks to discuss them.

Cancer treatment is individualized, and products can interact with medications or treatment.

Her oncology team should guide medical and treatment-related decisions.

Your job as a friend?

Love her. Support her. Make her laugh. Show up.

That's enough.

10. Keep Showing Up After October Ends

This may be the most important one.

On November 1, stores take down the pink displays.

Social media moves on.

The person with breast cancer doesn't necessarily get to.

Treatment may continue.

Recovery may continue.

Appointments continue.

Scans continue.

Life after cancer treatment can come with its own challenges, too.

So when Breast Cancer Awareness Month ends:

Keep checking in.

Keep sending the random text.

Keep remembering appointments.

Keep inviting her places.

Keep treating her like herself.

Cancer support should never have an expiration date.

What Is a Good Gift for Someone With Breast Cancer?

There isn't one perfect breast cancer gift.

The best gift depends on the person.

But if you're stuck, think about three things:

Comfort. Practicality. Personality.

A thoughtful gift could be a curated chemo care package, treatment-day tote, head wrap, food-delivery gift card, cozy comfort item, entertainment, or something completely unrelated to cancer that reminds her who she is outside of treatment.

The gift doesn't have to be extravagant.

It just needs to feel intentional.

Why I Created Chemo Kits

Chemo Kits wasn't created because I thought cancer care packages sounded like a good business idea.

It came from actually experiencing cancer.

As a Stage IV cancer survivor, I've sat in the treatment chair. I've experienced the appointments, uncertainty, and strange new reality that happens when cancer suddenly becomes part of your life.

That experience changed the way I think about supporting someone through treatment.

You don't always need the perfect thing to say.

Sometimes you need a way to say:

I see you.

I'm thinking about you.

I'm here.

You're not alone.

That's what I want every Chemo Kit to represent.
