What to Expect at Your First Chemotherapy Appointment

Hearing the words, "You need chemotherapy," can bring a mix of emotions—fear, uncertainty, and countless questions.

If you're preparing for your first treatment, you're probably wondering what the day will be like. While every treatment plan is different, understanding the process can help you feel more prepared and less anxious.

Before Your Appointment

Before treatment begins, your oncology team may:

  • Check your vital signs
  • Review your blood work
  • Ask about any symptoms you're experiencing
  • Explain your treatment plan
  • Answer any questions you have

Don't be afraid to bring a list of questions. Your care team is there to help.

What Happens During Chemotherapy?

Depending on your treatment, chemotherapy may be given through:

  • An IV
  • A port
  • A PICC line
  • Oral medication

Treatment can last anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours. Your oncology nurse will monitor you throughout your infusion and help manage any side effects that occur during treatment.

What Should You Bring?

Being prepared can make your treatment day much more comfortable.

Consider bringing:

  • A soft blanket
  • Comfortable clothing
  • Water bottle
  • Healthy snacks (if approved by your care team)
  • Headphones
  • A book or tablet
  • Phone charger
  • Lip balm
  • Hand lotion
  • Journal

Many patients also bring a tote bag to keep everything organized.

How Will You Feel?

Every person's experience is different.

Some people feel well enough to continue their normal routine after treatment, while others experience fatigue, nausea, or other side effects. Your oncology team will explain the possible side effects of your specific medications and provide guidance on managing them.

If you experience symptoms that concern you after treatment, contact your healthcare team right away.

Wear Comfortable Clothing

Choose loose-fitting clothes that help you stay comfortable for several hours.

If you have a port, consider wearing a shirt that allows easy access without having to remove multiple layers.

Many infusion centers can feel cold, so dressing in layers is often helpful.

Stay Hydrated

Drinking enough fluids before and after chemotherapy may help you stay hydrated. Follow the recommendations provided by your healthcare team, as individual needs can vary.

Bring a reusable water bottle to sip throughout your appointment.

Bring Someone With You

If your treatment center allows visitors and you feel comfortable doing so, having a friend or family member accompany you can provide emotional support and help with transportation if you're not feeling well afterward.

Give Yourself Grace

Your first chemotherapy appointment can feel overwhelming.

It's okay to be nervous.

It's okay to ask questions.

It's okay to cry.

Remember that every treatment brings you one step closer to your goal. Take things one day at a time and lean on your support system whenever you need it.
