What to Put in a Chemo Care Package (From a Stage 4 Cancer Survivor)

What to Put in a Chemo Care Package (From a Stage 4 Cancer Survivor)

When someone you love is starting chemotherapy, it’s natural to want to help. But most people have no idea what patients actually need during treatment.

As a Stage 4 cancer survivor, I created this guide to help you put together a chemo care package that is truly comforting, practical, and supportive. These are the items patients really use — the things I wish someone had handed me on my chemo days.

Comfort Items That Help During Treatment

Cozy Socks
Infusion rooms are freezing. Soft, warm socks help patients stay comfortable and grounded during long treatments.

Soft Blanket or Wrap
Chemo chills can hit suddenly. A small, lightweight blanket makes a huge difference.

Hydrating Lip Balm
Chemo causes dryness almost immediately. Lip balm is one of the most-used items.

Eye Mask
Infusion rooms are bright. An eye mask helps patients rest and feel calmer.

Skincare & Body Essentials Patients Actually Use

Unscented Lotion
Skin becomes dry and sensitive quickly. Unscented lotion is gentle and soothing.

Cooling Face Mask
This helps calm inflammation or “hot face” brought on by chemo.

Wipes or Hand Sanitizer
Hospitals are full of germs. Wipes feel gentler on sensitive skin than gels.

Nausea & Queasiness Relief Items

Ginger Drops or Ginger Tea
Ginger helps manage nausea — especially during the ride home.

Peppermint Essential Oil Roller
A quick, natural option for nausea waves or anxiety.

Plain Snacks
Simple crackers or pretzels help stabilize the stomach.

Practical Items Every Chemo Patient Needs

Water Bottle
Hydration is essential before, during, and after treatment.

Port Pillow
If the patient has a port, this makes wearing a seatbelt much more comfortable.

Notebook + Pen
Patients receive a lot of information. A notebook helps them keep track of questions and symptoms.

Pill Container
A must for managing multiple medications.

Emotional Support Items

Personal Note
Never skip this. A handwritten message means the world.

Small Token of Strength
A bracelet, charm, or keepsake becomes a reminder they’re not alone.

Personalized Touches
Adding their favorite color or a small add-on makes the package feel thoughtful and intentional.

Want a Pre-Made Chemo Care Package?

I created Chemo Kits because I lived through chemo and understood what patients truly need. Every item in my kits is chosen from lived experience — not guesswork.

Final Thoughts

Whether you create your own care package or choose a curated one, the love behind it matters the most. Even something small can make treatment feel less scary and more supported.

Your support means more than you know.
